This year we decided to try making maple syrup. My father had tapped a few many years ago when I was a kid and he decided it was too much work. I asked him if he still had his equipment. He decided he would help by tapping a couple trees for us. The my husband got excited about it and bought a bunch of spiles (the piece that goes in the tree) and picked up a few buckets. I think we started too late, but we did get some sap.
We got a fair amount. As you can see, it looks like water. This is a compost bucket. We also used some 4l water bottles and some buckets. Next year we will start earlier and tap more trees.
We boiled down one 5 gallon bucket so far. It took about 3.5 hours on the country cooker and another half hour on the stove in a smaller pot.
5 gallons gave us one cup. We have another 5 gallon bucket to boil down and hopefully we will get just a bit more.
