Oh Haze

The other day I noticed that my rabbit, Haze, has been losing weight. I thought it was because she's getting old. (She'll be 10 next month) I suspect that is part of the reason, but I decided to flip her over and check her out a bit. She had soft poo stuck to her bum, completely covering her rectum. I started the tedious task of cutting the fur away with a small pair of scissors, being careful not to cut her skin or tail. About half way through she got agitated and started to squirm, ultimately kicking me in the face. Well, that must have been too much for her because her head started to fall back and her eyes started to close. I thought she was going to die on me, but I figured if I didn't get the poop off, she'd die anyway. So I continued on. When I was finished I placed her back in her cage, where she promptly ran to the corner, back in, and then her head fell to the side. I left her alone (she'd done this recently before) to let her calm down. She's fine now. On to today. This morning I gave Haze, who lives next to her friend Chester, a large handful of hay and a few small pieces of carrot. She hadn't eaten her food from the day before, so she really didn't need any. I came home tonight to give Amelia some extra food and water, because she is nursing and I happen to glance over and I didn't see Haze. So then I thought "Ok, she's a big grey rabbit, she has to be there" Then I noticed something funny in Chester's cage. Haze. She ate her carrot bits but hadn't touched her hay, so I knew that she had been with Chester all day. I'm not sure what possessed her to decide to jump a 2 1/2 foot barrier into the next cage....

Haze passed away a few days later. March 8, 2016 Rest In Peace, my girl.
